St Mary's Primary School's Year 6 Eco-Warriors Tidy Up!

Eco WarriorsAs part of the national campaign by the Keep Britain Tidy group, the Eco-Warriors at St Mary's Primary School wished to take part in the summer Big Tidy Up. Keep Britain Tidy provided the green sacks and tabards, while the children provided the energy and enthusiasm for the tidy up.

Eco-WarriorThe focus of the tidy up was the school field, which is not attached directly to the school, and the surrounding approaches to the field in preparation for the school's summer fete. The Eco-Warriors wanted the field to look its best for all the visitors to the fete.

So on the morning of 24th June, the Eco-Warriors, armed with green sacks, litter pickers, gloves and teacher (me), tidied up the school field and the surrounding Harold Passage, Ashen Tree Lane and the grassed banked area adjoining the school playground. In 45 minutes they had collected six green sacks of rubbish - from sleeping bags to traffic cones, bottles to cans. The Eco-Warriors were extremely upset to find so much rubbish just left and thrown Findings!onto the ground, when there is a council bin situated next to the field! However, they were extremely proud of their hard work and how good it felt to see the area looking so clean and tidy.

They undertook a second tidy up on Monday 6th July, in preparation for the school's junior sports day on the field, but luckily didn't need six green bags this time!

A Report from the Warriors themselves...

Eco-WarriorOn the 24th of June, the Eco-School group at St Mary's Church Of England Primary School took part in the Big Tidy Up Campaign in the school grounds and the area directly around it. In the area around St Mary's, some of us found things such as sleeping bags, bottles, cans, clothes, pottery, wrappers, even traffic signs and cones! Altogether we collected six bags of rubbish. Unfortunately the council never rung us back after we had called several times so we weren't able to cover all of the areas that we wanted to.
