Feed the Birds Day 25/26th October 2008

Update!

Well what a lovely way to spend an afternoon! We had lots of enthusiastic children, as well as parents, and we were delighted that they thoroughly enjoyed all the games and activities that we had prepared for them. The ‘Signs of Autumn' walk was a great success with everyone ooh-ing and ahh-ing over a very colourful snail that they found as well as being fascinated by the deer prints in the mud.

robinHowever, it was preparing bird cake and ‘crumbly maggots' that seemed to attract the most attention. Colouring in, playing Worms & Branches or putting together the Find the Duck puzzle were quickly forgotten as the children realised that they could get in a mess with smelly lard, bird seed and flour. One little girl was heard repeatedly saying ‘sgusting' at the top her voice but the smile (and flour) on her face told us that she thought (di)sgusting was great fun.

One thing was evident though, that from the youngest to the oldest child, those that attended were eager to learn or even more eager to tell you what they remembered from last time. It made it all worthwhile and we finished the event confident that most of them would be feeding the birds in their garden this winter.

Thank you to everyone who attended and to all the volunteers who made it possible. Please feed the birds in your garden, workplace or school this winter. See you all again in the spring.
