BGI Newsletter

  Issue 12 - October 2009

From the Editor…

I hope this newsletter finds you in good health and you have all enjoyed a warm, relaxing and green summer.

If you received our very first newsletter you may realise that this edition is a very special one. It is our First Birthday Edition and we are celebrating successfully coming full circle. It is fitting that this has happened in September as I always feel it is a month of changes, to review what we have achieved, look ahead and plan what needs to be done. The harvests are nearly in and we are turning our attention to preparing for the winter months ahead. The sun is setting a little earlier each evening allowing us time to contemplate what needs changing and what needs improving. At the same time there are so many exciting new starts - new schools, new classes and for some young, and ‘more mature,’ students the Big Adventure of university begins where a whole new world of amazing opportunities opens up.

The BGI has grown immensely in the past year. We are extremely proud of what Brigit has achieved and with more of our combined hard work and dedication we look forward to spreading the green message to more people in the next 12 months.

Letter of the month

‘I watched a film a couple of weeks ago called the Age of Stupid… after seeing it felt a little depressed about where the human race was taking the world so the next morning I decided to do something about it.

Here is what I have done so far:

  • Turned off all electrical equipment in the house and just turn it on when needed.
  • Reduced the number of TVs in our house from two to one.
  • Changed our phones to ones that use less electricity.
  • Used soapnuts.
  • Ordered an energy monitor - the lady in customer services told me that she would send me one for free.
  • I have used Feecycle to get a compost bin and have started composting all of my green and brown waste.
  • I have put my name down for an allotment.
  • I only use the car when I absolutely have too.
  • I have found a local organic farm that is just 2 miles down the road that gives me my entire week’s veggies for free in return for 4 hours hard graft a week - I see two benefts here - the veg and also an education that I can use when I get my own allotment.
  • I have 3-minute showers instead of baths.
  • I have asked for a water meter to be installed.
  • I am going to be installing a water butt over the next few weeks.
  • I have a Hippo on the way for my toilet.

I think that’s about all, but I would really love anyone else to share with me what else I can do. If it is going to reduce my carbon footprint then I am up for “almost” anything.’

Richard MacKenzie, Witney, Oxfordshire

Note: We were so inspired by Richard’s letter. It goes to show that all those small things can really make a difference!

  Green Tip of the Month

Mary Horncastle from Reading emailed in to say ‘Put leftovers into a plastic container, such as an old ice-cream carton, to store in the fridge. It saves using cling film and works especially well with cheese or sliced meat. Do the same with sandwiches and packed lunches.’
