BGI Newsletter

  Issue 5 - January 2009

From the Editor...

It's such a busy time of year, when even my lame social diary is full, and I am rushing here, there and everywhere with family and school events. But suddenly, there will be a time of calm, after the storm. A time to relax and then regroup and focus on the year ahead.

This month's 'new look' newsletter is all about that forward thinking and ideas to make 2009 as green as we can. You don't have to make big changes to make a difference...if everyone made small changes, our planet may just be able to breathe a sigh of relief. Have a look at the BGI team's resolutions to see what we hope to achieve this year.

As the BGI grows, so does our group of friends. This month we have articles from Friends of the Earth and Paul Peacock (of Homefarmer magazine), and a review of Ben Law's The Woodland Year. Also, a wonderful, brand new product, blended just for us, to raise money for the BGI!!

Wishing all our readers a happy, healthy and green 2009.

A message from Brigit...

Wow! How did 2008 come and go so quickly?  In my case, I suspect it probably had something to do with the fact that I’ve been so completely focused on the the BGI bus project that I somehow missed whatever else was going on around me. Anyone who has been involved in charity work or setting up a small business will know how difficult it is when you feel so passionate about something for it not to become all-consuming...and, oh boy, has this project been all-consuming!

This time last year I was still searching for a double decker bus to convert and was blissfully ignorant about the challenges ahead. There are a few things I would do differently in retrospect, but all in all it’s been an amazing year.  I’ve had so much help with the project from so many lovely people, that the friends I’ve made, alone, have made it all worthwhile...not to mention the fact that the BGI is now the proud owner of the most beautifully converted bus in the world!

On a personal note, with 2009 just around the corner and with the bus refit pretty much complete, I have resolved to make more time to enjoy some of the things I’ve missed out on over the last twelve months or so; like walking, reading, listening to the radio etc. I also promise my family and friends that I’ll try very hard to engage in the occasional ‘non-bus-related’ conversation. Having said that, and given the fact that our refitted bus will be commencing its tour sometime in late spring, I do expect 2009 to be a very busy (excuse the pun) year...for all involved.

Anyway, we have a bus tour to plan so I’d better get back to work!!!! I wish all of our wonderful volunteers and supporters a very happy and peaceful New Year and I look forward to being able to tell you in January that our new engine has been installed and that we are ready to get out there and make a difference.

Seasons greetings to one and all.
