World's First Ever...
National Carbon Footprint Day: October 2nd 2008
Award winning environmentalist Donnachadh McCarthy is launching the world's first ever National Carbon Footprint Day on Thursday, 2nd of October.
Having made his 1840s Camberwell terrace home into London's first carbon negative home, he wants to encourage millions of others to do likewise, by launching an annual day when people will be encouraged to pledge to measure and reduce their annual carbon footprints.
To assist in this, www.nationalcarbonfootprintday.org was launched this month, to enable people to record their pledge to measure their carbon footprint. The website will then automatically remind them every year on National Carbon Footprint Day to take their utility measurements, so that they can calculate their footprints and see what successful progress they have made from the previous year.
Donnachadh says 'With the Arctic Summer Ice Cap now melting at a rate over six times faster than predicted only 4 years ago, climate change is now truly an urgent climate crisis. National Carbon Footprint Day will encourage millions of people to start taking the urgent action needed to avoid total catastrophe.'
Well-known BBC comedian Marcus Brigstocke and one of Britain's leading environmental politicians Jenny Jones MLA, former Deputy Mayor of London (Green Party) have agreed to be our patrons. 'I am thrilled to be supporting the world's first National Carbon Footprint Day, as we all want to be greener and National Carbon Footprint Day helps set our own personal targets and then improve on them every year.' - Jenny Jones MLA
