What did you do today to celebrate Earth Day?
The Big Green Bus crew had a fantastic sunshine-filled day out at ‘The Fold', near Worcester (http://www.thefold.co.uk) where we met loads of lovely people. Most of the visitors had come especially because they knew the bus was going to be there, but some had spotted the bus on the way past and called in to see what it was all about. We also had an extended visit from Radio Hereford & Worcester who gave their listeners a guided tour of the bus and interviewed us about the charity.
It was all very different from a city centre event because there were probably less than 50 people on the bus throughout the day. This meant we were able to manage the day with just myself, Ginny and Andy, plus Owen, who has been helping recently with some of the work on the bus. This was Owen's first experience at a bus event and I hope he enjoyed it enough to want to come and help out at Bournemouth and Poole for their up-coming ‘Big Green Fortnight'.
Every bus day is different, and today was full of surprises. As well as welcoming many people who finally had a chance to see the bus after listening patiently to me rattling on about it for the last year, we also had a very special half hour of live music on the top deck! Malvern is full of musicians, and one of my favourites is Julia Palmer-Price. Julia is an extremely talented cellist who also sings quirky and captivating songs, so I was over the moon when she arrived at lunch time with her cello and her friend Benjamin - a fellow musician and harmonica player. We were treated to a impromptu half hour of delightful music, and the most special thing of all was that Julia and Benjamin played an improvised piece inspired by the bus. So, we now have our very own ‘musical portrait'. It's impossible to describe how delightful it was to sit on the top deck of the bus with the sunshine pouring through the windows, listening to such a beautiful and unique piece of music. Benjamin recorded the music, so with his and Julia's permission I'll see if I can find a way to put it on the BGI website. Thank you Julia and Benjamin for making it such a special lunch time!
The rest of the day whizzed by and we were still chatting to visitors as we packed down at 6pm. I just hope our visitors enjoyed themselves as much as we did - and I hope everyone reading this also had a lovely ‘Earth Day' today.
