Freeconomy

It’s late evening on Saturday 28th November - ‘Buy Nothing Day’ - and I’ve just come back from an amazing (and FREE!) day out in Bristol. Mark Boyle and other members of the ‘freeconomy’ community had set themselves the seemingly impossible task of gathering together enough ingredients, with no cash changing hands, to provide a feast for 300+ people for free… and they succeeded!

I’m writing an article about the whole day for next month’s newsletter so I won’t go into details now; suffice to say that I am a complete convert to the concept of freeconomy. That’s not to say I believe I can live without cash the way Mark has for the last year (you can read his blog about that on the ‘justfortheloveofit’ website), but the idea of doing something for nothing - and sharing, say, the tools I hardly ever use (or what skills I have) with someone else - is an idea I embrace with open arms.

Yesterday was not just amazing because 300+ people were fed for free, but because of the wonderful sense of community it created which I was lucky enough to be a part of. I actually had as much fun preparing food for all those people as I had eating it when it was ready - and I have the ‘vegetable peeling blisters’ on my thumb and forefinger to prove it!!!

Watch out for the full article in next month’s newsletter… but in the meantime have a think about what you could do for someone in your community this week ‘Just for the Love of it’!
