Back down to Earth

I can't believe it's over a week since we returned from Bournemouth and Poole's Big Green Fortnight and we haven't unpacked the bus yet! We've been so busy playing catch-up in our new office (which I'll write about later this week) that we haven't had a moment to spare. We can't leave it any longer though because we have an event in Hereford town centre this Friday 5th June, so today I must don my ‘cleaning the bus' hat and give it a good spring clean so it all looks spick and span for World Environment Day.

The Big Green Fortnight really was an amazing project to be a part of and was an uplifting experience for us all. The bus attended three Town Centre events, made an appearance at Bournemouth Library and the Lighthouse Theatre in Poole and visited five primary schools in the area. Each event and each school was very different and we enjoyed them all in very different ways.

The biggest thing that came out of the fortnight for me was the fact that when people work together they are always greater than the sum of their parts. It was inspiring to see so many organisations working together on the same project and we worked with some really wonderful people. It would be too difficult to mention everyone (or every organisation) by name, but I'd like to say a special personal thank you to Harriet Stewart-Jones of Transition BH who somehow managed to find time to organise so many wonderful speakers for the Big Green Bus, at the same time as juggling a million other balls. Thank you so much for all your help Harriet!

As well as working alongside Transition BH and other local environmental organisations, we also combined forces during the fortnight with Sustrans and the Energy Saving Trust. It was great fun working on the school events with local Sustrans ‘bike-it' officer Jason Falconer and also to have the lovely Joanna Nicholson from the Energy Saving Trust working with us in the bus at the Town Centre events. We made a great team!

The other organisation that made a huge difference to us was Transdev Yellow Buses. Jenni Wilkinson, Don Whitemore and Gary Corry from Transdev put so much time and energy into helping the tour to run smoothly that I don't know how we would have managed without them. We were so well looked after and spoiled by the Transdev team that we almost decided to relocate the bus to Bournemouth!

Anyway, the bus beckons and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the weather will be a little cooler today because it gets pretty warm on the top deck even when you're not scrubbing the floor...
